Rome is a city filled with many great attractions. This is one of the reasons why Rome is such a popular holiday destination.

Colosseum

The Rome Colesseum, also known as the Coliseum, is without a doubt the most popular and most famous attractions. If you visit Rome and do not visit this amazing attraction then you really haven't visited Rome at all.

The Colosseum is an extremely large amphitheatre that was build originally to house 55,000 spectators. This Rome attraction was build in the year 72 AD and was used for battles involving gladiators and wild animals.

Fontani di Trevi

The Fontani di Trevi fountain in Rome is most likely the most photographed Rome attraction. The fountain become well known partly due to the movie "La Dolce Vita" as it was shown in there.

Visitors to this great Rome attraction throw coins into the Fontani di Trevi and make a wish. If you would like to visit the Fontani di Trevi then please head over to the Piazzi di Trevi.

The Vatican

Vatican city if of course another world famous Rome attraction. Most historians rank the Vatican among the most important historical monuments in the world.

The Vatican is home to the Pope who is the head of the Roman Catholic Church. The Vatican is actually a state on its own and is the smallest state in the world. Even if you are not Roman Catholic, the Vatican is yet another Rome attraction that you should not miss.

 
Vatican Museums

The elongated complex provides access to the famous Raphael rooms and Michelangelo's frescoes in the Sistine Chapel. During busy tourist seasons, try avoiding the place and go in the afternoon. Don't even think about going on Saturday unless you have just got time to waste.

Tip: The Vatican Museums is open and free admission the last Sunday of the month.

 
Spanish Steps

One of the most characteristic piazze in Rome is Piazza di Spagna. The work of the famous team Bernini -- father Pietro and son Gian Lorenzo -- under the commission of Pope Urbano VIII Barberini in 1627.

The fountain stands above the rest with its minimalistic design, yet grand enough to attract the masses. The fountain features a boat halfway submerged in a tub. The sun and the bees on the bow and stern are the symbol and family crest of Pope Urbano.

 
Roman Forum

Even 2000 years later, these forums are still here today. Consider this downtoan Rome where back in the day, you may have crossed paths with Caesar himself!

You'll find ancient commercial, political, and religious buildings that displays the true power of Rome. Open daily. Bring plenty of film for your camera since there are many places here to take great photos.

 
Castel Sant'Angelo

An ancient castle in Rome as magnificent in photos as it is to be standing right in front of it. There are numerous things to see and do here and not very many of the activities are publicized.

The staff is very knowledgeable and can help guide you through the castel. For thousands of years the Popes used this structure as Rome's Citadel and dungeon in their continuous struggle against the Holy Roman Emperors and the feudal barons.

The Streets of Rome

If you're just too lazy to seek out all the attractions, the streets of Rome offers a lot in itself such as shopping, galleries, wine, delicatessen and much more.

Most streets look a bit antique-ish but there is still enough to see and do. You can spend a whole day on some of these streets just eating, shopping, and taking an easy stroll.

 
Tiber River

The second longest river in Rome is the Tiber River. If you're not into following the crowds, this is the place to get away from it all. Take an early morning stroll and discover how peaceful and quiet Rome can be.

You'll also find the Theatre of Marcellus, The Temple of Vesta, Forum Boarium and The Temple of Fortunus along the way.
